Pride Month is celebrated every June to honour the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan.
Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, events and concerts.
LGBTQ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are also held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.
When you live in a country where homosexuality is yet to be decriminalized, celebrating pride month might look different from one person to the next.
It may look like holding your partner in tenderness celebrating your love, it may look like taking your gay cousin to their first queer event and it may look like coming out to your friends and followers on social media.
Whichever path you take this month, take pride in knowing that your existence alone is enough.
You matter and your life matters.
Queer African lives matter and it is possible to find joy and even pride on this continent.
